About Us: The Story of Intermission Beer Company
Intermission Beer Company is the brainchild of Justin and Courtney, a husband-and-wife team whose story began at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in the theater department. A little about us: Courtney majored in Stage Management, while Justin pursued his passion for Set Design. It was during his college years that Justin first dabbled in home brewing, sharing the experience with a few roommates.
After graduating from VCU, both Justin and Courtney embarked on professional theater careers, working in Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, and the surrounding areas. Their shared love for the arts took them across Virginia, honing their skills and deepening their appreciation for community.
In 2007, after purchasing their first home, Justin rediscovered his passion for homebrewing. This hobby quickly escalated, and their house soon became overflowing with brewing equipment. To accommodate Justin’s growing passion, they built a garage. However, even the garage couldn’t contain the expanding collection of brewing supplies for long!
A pivotal moment arrived in 2012 with the passage of Virginia Senate Bill 604. This legislation, which significantly altered the landscape for craft breweries in Virginia, provided the spark Justin and Courtney needed to combine their two passions: the art of brewing and their love for the arts. They decided to take the leap and open their own brewery.
This decision led to the birth of Intermission Beer Company, a unique establishment that blends the creativity of the arts with the craft of brewing. Intermission Beer Company – Brewery & Taproom opened its doors on September 1st, 2017, and has been serving up delicious craft beers and a unique atmosphere ever since.
